1 When the game starts the two player sitting next to the button, the dealer, have to put in a forced bet, small and big blind. 2 All players are dealt two cards faced down, pocket cards. 3 Then there is a round of betting starting with the guy to the left of the two who posted the blinds. 4 Like most poker games the players can call, raise, or fold. 5 The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the flop. These are communal cards that anyone can use in combination with their two pocket cards to form a poker hand. 6 There is another round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer. 7 The dealer flips one more card onto the table. This is called the turn card. 8 Another round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer. 9 Finally, the dealer places a final card face up on the table. This is called the river. Players can now use any of the five cards on the table or the two cards in their pocket to form a five card poker hand. 10 There is one final round of betting. 11 After that, all of the players remaining in the game begin to reveal their hands. It's called the showdown. Players use a combination of their pocket cards and the community cards to form a poker hand. 12 The player who shows the best hand wins! There are cases where players with equal hands share the winnings.
Basic Strategy for beginners
First Two Cards If you are playing at a full ring game, 9 or 10 seaters. If you are new to the game play only: A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, 10-10, 9-9, 8-8, A-Ks (the s means that both cards are the same suit – both clubs), A-Qs, K-Qs. Fold everything else.
The Flop Don't be afraid to cut your losses after the flop. If you don't have the top pair after the flop (if the flop is K-9-5, the top pair would be two Ks), and you're not in good position for a straight or a flush, you should probably get out of the hand.
Fourth Street and Fifth Street To stay in the pot you need a hand good enough to win, or a good chance of making your hand.
If your hand in any stage of the game, is good enough to call with its probably better to bet or raise. A call is a weak play in Texas Holdem. The better play is often to raise or fold.
