How to play Caribbean Stud Poker
|
|
As the name suggests, Caribbean Stud Poker, usually known simply as Caribbean Stud, is based on the card game poker, or Stud poker to be precise. The game was invented in 1988 on the Caribbean island of Aruba, and it has since spread rapidly to casinos all over the world. Caribbean Stud is also the only table game where players have the chance to win a progressive jackpot.
The players and the dealer are dealt five cards each from a standard deck of 52. The players do not play against each other, but against the bank like in Blackjack. To win you must produce a better poker hand than the dealers. You can also bet on the progressive jackpot, whereby a bonus is paid for particularly good poker hands. However, to be in with a chance of winning these bonuses, you must have put down an extra stake in advance specifically for the jackpot.
To begin with, all players lay down an ANTE stake in the relevant field. The players and the dealer are then dealt five cards each. The player’s five cards are all dealt face down. The dealer’s first four cards are face down but the fifth is dealt open for all to see. You then have to decide whether you wish to play on or fold. If you fold you will lose your ANTE wager. If you want to continue the hand you have to lay down a BET stake. This has to be exactly twice the amount of the ANTE stake. The dealer then turns his cards face up for all to see. If the dealer does not have at least A-K high, the banks hand does not qualify and the game cannot be opened. In this case your BET stake is returned to you without winning or loosing. You will win even money on your ANTE stake, whatever cards you have in your hand.
If the dealer does have at least A-K high, the banks hand qualifies and the game can be opened, at which point your hand is compared to the banks hand. If your hand is lower than the dealers, you lose both your ANTE and your BET stake. If you have a higher hand than the dealer, you win even money on your ANTE stake, and your BET wins according to the following payout table: Pair 1:1 Two Pair 2:1 Three-of-a-kind 3:1 Straight 4:1 Flush 5:1 Full House 7:1 Four-of-a-kind 20:1 Straight Flush 50:1 Royal Flush 100:1
For the progressive bet you will win the jackpot with a royal flush and 10% of the jackpot with a straight flush. But the payouts on this bet differ from casino to casino. A flush will probably pay 50-100, full house 75-150, four of a kind 100-500.
The correct strategy for the player is as follows: - Raise with a pair or higher - Fold with less than A-K high - Only bet on the progressive jackpot if the jackpot is very high, this is a really bad bet in most cases.
Caribbean Stud is a game where you cant beat the casino in the long run; the house edge is approximately 5%.
